V katerih živilih najdemo največ ostankov pesticidov?
Zveza potrošnikov Slovenije je pred kratkim objavila rezultate obsežne raziskave, v kateri so s pomočjo javno dostopnih poročil ugotavljali prisotnost ostankov pesticidov v hrani – največ so jih v letu 2012 našli v breskvah, kitajskem zelju, solati, kolerabi, pomarančah in ne nazadnje papriki.

Some substances in the group of primary aromatic amines (PAAs) are carcinogenic. PAAs can, for example, occur as contaminants in colour pigments. They can pose a health risk in colour-printed paper napkins and bakery bags as well as other food contact materials if they migrate into food.
BfR advises against beer can chicken
Various cooking recipes are currently being circulated, for example on the Internet, for grilling a chicken on a beer can. In the opinion of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), this type of preparation is not advisable. For it is to be assumed that the heat during grilling and frying releases harmful substances from the printed exterior as well as the coated inside of the beer can. These substances are then transferred to the chicken meat.

Aluminium and its compounds are contained in numerous foods and products intended for consumers. In food, aluminium compounds can occur naturally or as part of food additives. In addition, aluminium ions can, under certain conditions, be transferred to food from food packaging and tableware.
Avoiding toxic gases from the pellet bunker
Wood pellets for heating systems and heaters are regarded as sustainable carbon dioxide-neutral fuel. However, the wood shavings pressed into oblong little sticks have potentially hazardous properties when stored in large quantities: the manufacturing process involving cutting up, heating and drying of the wood and the shavings gives rise to auto-oxidation processes in certain wood components. For example, gases are formed from unsaturated fatty acids, such as the harmful carbon monoxide (CO) and various aldehydes. Even months after production, the pellets can still emit gases. In storage rooms, the concentration can be so high that it can lead to severe poisoning in persons entering the rooms.
Aluminium-containing antiperspirants contribute to aluminium intake
Antiperspirants denote cosmetic products with an anti-perspiration effect which are available as roll-ons, sticks, creams or aerosols (sprays). The anti-perspiration effect is achieved by means of aluminium salts which block the ends of the sweat ducts for a certain amount of time. The safety of aluminium and antiperspirants continues to be critically examined. This is notably true with regard to possible development of Alzheimer’s disease and the development of breast cancer. Scientific evidence shows that high doses of aluminium have neurotoxic effects on humans and embryotoxic effects in animal studies.

Documents Link More Deaths to Energy Drinks (CSPI Asks FDA for Labels Warning of Heart Attack, Convulsion, and Other Adverse Reactions Linked to Energy Drinks)
Documents obtained from the Food and Drug Administration show that since late 2012, 17 previously unreported deaths have been linked to the controversial caffeinated beverages known as energy drinks. According to adverse event reports collected by the agency since 2004, a total of 34 deaths have now been linked to energy drinks. Of those, 22 deaths have been linked to 5-Hour Energy, 11 deaths have been linked to Monster, and one death, a first, has been linked to Rockstar.
FDA Warns Consumers on Bulk Caffeine
The Food and Drug Administration today warned consumers not to consume powdered pure caffeine in the wake of an Ohio teenager’s death. While that is a step forward, FDA should take whichever additional measures it can against these products, and it has much more to do if it really wants to protect the public. For instance, the Center for Science in the Public Interest wrote FDA in June on the need for the Agency to prevent harms from caffeine-laced energy drinks by issuing a public health warning against their consumption, especially by youths, limiting the amount of caffeine in those products, and slapping a warning label on them. The overuse and misuse of caffeine in the food supply is creating a wild-west marketplace, and it’s about time the sheriff noticed and did something.

PESTICIDI V ŽIVILIH: Veste katera živila so najbolj »umazana«?
ZPS je tokrat vzel pod drobnogled podatke, katera živila so lahko najbolj obremenjena s fitofarmacevtskimi sredstvi oziroma pesticidi. Preverili so večletna, javno dostopna poročila, tako iz EU kot tudi slovenska, o rezultatih analiz o ostankih pesticidov v živilih. V Sloveniji so bili najboljši rezultati pri živilih iz ekološke pridelave, žitih, živilih živalskega izvora ter pri hrani za dojenčke in male otroke, saj vzorci niso vsebovali zaznavnih količin ostankov pesticidov.

Voda je osnovna sestavina našega telesa, vendar na to radi pozabimo. Še dobro, da nas na pomanjkanje vode v telesu spomni občutek žeje, a takrat smo že nekoliko dehidrirani. Da v poletnih, toplih dneh ne bomo dehidrirani, za žejo popijmo zadostno količino vode.

Kaj jesti: lokalno in sezonsko poleti
Če smo v zimskem času jedli lokalno/sezonsko sadje in zelenjavo, smo bili omejeni na skladiščeno, vloženo, sušeno ali kako drugače konzervirano. Pomladi in poleti, ko se narava prebudi, vzcveti in obrodi, lahko na tržišču kupimo največ lokalno pridelanega sadja in zelenjave. Če kupujemo lokalno, ker želimo prispevati k ekonomskemu razvoju svojega okolja, potem kupujemo pridelke, ki so pridelani v Sloveniji. Na vsakem pridelku mora biti zapisano njegovo poreklo, zato to ni težka naloga. Če pa lokalno razumemo bolj geografsko, potem kupujemo tudi pridelke iz krajev, ki so oddaljeni največ en dan vožnje – v tem primeru so lokalni tudi pridelki iz Dalmacije, Makedonije, Grčije, Italije in celo Španije.
